M1935 Single Decal Kriegsmarine Helmet (Gray)

This M1935 helmet shown below is a fine example of the small number of Kriegsmarine helmets that were painted "battleship gray" for use on naval vessels.  Helmets of this type are typically the standard issue field green examples converted by the addition of a hand painted finish of gray of the exterior of the helmet.  The helmet below is a model M1935 double decal that was modified by the removal of the National tricolored shield followed by a coat of gray paint on the exterior only.  The interior still bears the "apple green" finish as originally issued.  All of the helmet components are dated "1939" although the conversion likely took place during the 1940-41 time frame.  Once again, of interest is the brown chinstrap so common to the "non-standard" configuration of Kriegsmarine helmets.  The helmet bears the owner's name penciled into the leather liner.
